Book 3 follows the storyline in Book 1

Book 4 follows book 2

Book 5 is all new

Book 6 merges the storylines from book 3 and 4

Book 7 merges the rest...

and then it keeps going. There are of course side stories, and it might be more enjoyable if you read Esslemont's book at the point where they were published with regards to Erikson's.

However, the books are generally regarded as:

1. Confusing for some, and not really all that impressive.
2. Great - apart from a certain storyline.
3. Excellent - apart from some boring dream stuff.
4. Confusing start, and then a not too impressive finish.
5. Love/Hate book. Very different from the others.
6. We're starting to see a dip in quality here.
7. Sidestories are starting to take more and more time. Nothing exceptional.
8. Slow going, but a very rewarding ending of the book.
9. Worst book in the series, now it really gets tragic, and not in the good way, either. But it is a set-up for the next book.
10. The conclusion - still a bit too much sidestory, but the quality returns to its higher points in the early part of the series.
"People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realize how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world" - Calvin.
