So, is there one overall story arc to the series, or just a bunch of smaller arcs that seem to come together at the end?
There is one major arc, but it consists of lots of smaller stories that seem to be separate and disconnected, but the last volume reveals how they impact on one another. There's also a fair number of unconnected side-stories, and Esslemont's books also impact on the situation as well.
