I'm sorry, this is something that has been bugging me for a long time. It looks and reads like "rip" and it's really shorthand for "I can't be bothered to write out the words and can't find anything original to say".
I really am considering posting on the CMB with a general request that people stop doing this. Write "So-and-so has died" as the subject and then put something thoughtful in the body of the post.
This is not directed at you specifically but at the world at large.
