The Honor Harrington series is Sci-Fi done with the flavor of of Horatio Hornblower's wind, sails, and broadsides. In his Safehold series he takes Sci-Fi and mixes it wiht the Medieval crusades. He is a very good author who develops living characters and tells large stories.
For just plain fun John Ringo writes a very good "aliens invade the earth" series in the Legacy of the Aldenatta.

All of these are published by Baen and many of their books are available (either wholey or in part) free from their website.
