I really liked SoT, especially Wizard's First Rule, which is still one of my favorite books. Goodkind focuses on a few characters and makes them really stick in your head- kind of the opposite of what other "high fantasy" authors like Martin and Jordan do.

That said, I have heard pretty bad things about Law of Nines. If I were you I would wait until your local library gets it.
