Some parts of Orwell's dystopia did in fact come true, though.

And not just in the communist dictatorships that are now largely gone. The increasingly omnipresent video cameras in the UK in particular, to a lesser extent elsewhere, even if they obviously aren't in people's houses. The way the meaning of words is sometimes hollowed out or altered for political propaganda purposes - the Western powers renaming their War Ministries "Ministries of Defense" around or shortly after WW2 is the most obvious case.
I still haven't read Brave New World so no doubt you're right that it resembles our current society more, I'm just saying some of Orwell's predictions did indeed come true to some extent, despite the influence of his novel.

If you could pass on only one book to the next generation, what would it be?

I think Huxley has a better understanding of human nature and less politcal motive
