Well, age does not necessarily make it more difficult for me. I find Dumas easier than much newer fiction.
Ah. Yes, well, I do indeed recall Bertière's writing as fairly easy to read... but I don't really think Castelot would give you much difficulties, at least not most of the time. There was the occasional tricky passage or word I'd never heard of, but not often.
That is not the standard I usually use 
It's true it doesn't exactly say much, a book being easier than that one.
