I liked the conman-film style of writing some parts of it. In fact, quite a lot of it read like it was written to be filmed. And I really liked that he stuck to the suggestion of a powerful elder race without explaining it all in detail. Ditto the alchemy. He managed to avoid the trap that captures and eats a lot of fantasy writers.
I had some doubts about the plotting underway, but he managed to bring it off satisfactorily. I do wonder about this Sabitha. He completely forgot about her in the second half. I imagine she will play some part in the next book, which I will read.
