That is what one of the blurbs said about Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code as well. I have developed a flight response when faced with Eco comparisons.

But the comparison this time concerns the semiology theory (it's named in the review I read, but I have never heard of this semiologist) that apparently inspired Miéville, which apparently compares well to the sophisticated and intelligent way Eco used the theory of signs in the Name of the Rose, so at least for once it does concern a valid point of comparison.

Funny you mention Brown. A few of the European reviewers who disliked CoP have said variations on "With this novel, Eco has fallen to the level of Dan Brown".


They are probably the same reviewers who compared Brown to Eco to begin with.
