Borrow, beg, steal, whatever you have to do.

j-whitt is right about the first book (The Gunslinger) being oddly written. It was one of King's earliest works and it does have some flaws. The good news is that The Gunslinger is around 200 pages so you can fly through that and get on with the meat of the story. The series as a whole is fantastic and book 4 (Wizard & Glass) is on my top ten of all time list.
