I still don't get how she could hate it. She doesn't seem to have THAT much problem with authority.

I hated everything of Steinbeck's that I was forced to read but it wasn't because I was forced. It was because it was unrelentingly depressing.


You should read Tortilla Flat. It was one of my favourites when I was younger (I haven't dared reread it in later years because I am worried it will not be as good -- which is probably a baseless fear). It was funny.
