People aren't suddenly obsessed with vampires because of the downward spiral of society and the death of God. They're obsessed with vampires because that's just what the current trend is. In the 80s, it was robots.
Maybe I'm being a bit too hard on you by saying it's crap. It's definitely a valid interpretation. It just reads like someone in a college lit class trying too hard to find meaning.
About a decade ago, yo-yos briefly became popular again (after falling out of style, becoming popular, falling out of style, becoming popular...). Was this indicative of our national character, that we longed for the idyllic days of yesteryear, for a historical Americana that never actually existed?
Vampires are neat because you can do a lot with them, they're standardized enough to make people comfortable, but customizable enough that you can tweak them for whatever themes you want (gothic horror, comedies, power fantasies, romances). There's the "bad boy" element, which is always intriguing.
