I have no stats to back me up, but have suicides gone up drastically in the last 5-10 years? I honestly just think you're reading too much into the natural cyclical shifting tastes of teens.
At the turn of the century, all any girls could think of were boy bands. And we right-minded folk held our heads in our hands and went, "What is wrong with today's youth? Do they not care about meaning, about talent? They scream and swoon for these obvious, aggressively marketed, prepackaged groups of boys that can't even play music!"
And now... boy bands have mostly fallen by the wayside. Barring the Jonas Brothers, anyway.
Honestly, the 2 main "negative" attitudes I experience with teens is either outrage (outrage at the government, outrage at their parents, outrage at war crimes, outrage at corporations, etc) or apathy (just worrying about Facebook, Forever 21, and football)
