The origin of the real last name "Chekhov" is "Chekh", or a Czech. In other words, Chekhov's ancestors came from the Czech Republic, thus generating the last name. The origin of "Chekov" is probably Gene Roddenberry's inability to spell, but if it WERE a real last name, it would come from "chek", which is a Russian borrowing of the English "check/cheque", and thus the last name would have something to do with writing promissory notes that one's bank has agreed to honor, provided there is enough money in one's account.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
