It's certainly true that repetition, vagueness and ambiguity abound, and that there are funner reads. All the same, it's a bit shameful that I have the degree I have without ever even having read the complete Qur'an, hence this attempt to remedy that. If I want to have something intelligent to say about Islam, this is kind of a conditio sine qua non.
I think we can be very happy if those attempts in Turkey (and elsewhere, no doubt) to revise the hadith collections succeed and gain some mainstream acceptance. Altering the Qur'an, just not going to happen.
The Qur'an is in need of serious academic criticism and study, leading ultimately to massive revision, but of course it is difficult to actually do that without getting death threats from crazies.
