I've heard that it's really good if you can power through the first book. I'm about halfway through the first book, and my head is spinning from terms/places/things that aren't being explained. Opinions on if I ought to hang in there?

I personally did not have any issues with the first book (those came later...) but I love this series. Original, non-traditional fantasy populated by some of my favorite-ever characters. Read it, especially since all 10 are now published and you don't have to wait for a next book.
