I do plan to read the second book but I'm waiting for paperback so I can get it cheaper. And there probably is a lot to the story that I'm missing, like you said, and hopefully I will then get the subtlety and nuances of the first book. Are you saying that I need the second book to understand or I'm just missing some important stuff?

Some of it is there to find in the first book, such as what the Chandrian did to Kvothe, clues as to the identity of Auri, some other stuff. But there is probably a greater number of things hidden in the first book that are impossible to clue in on until a person reads the second book. After reading the second book, re-reading the first one carefully with your new knowledge reveals a plethora of new clues. That doesn't help new readers to the series when they first read the new book, because there's no way to know about these things, but I hope it will make the series as a whole something special when it's finished.

I look forward to reading it. You advertise well

I aim to please!

So the strange creatures and Bast storylines won't be resolved in this trilogy? That's a tad disappointing.

Yes, I really have no idea what will or won't be resolved, but if a second trilogy is in the cards it seems likely that a number of secrets won't be resolved just yet. However, while Bast and the true purpose of Chronicler (he may be more than he seems) might not be resolved, we do learn more about the strange creatures in the second book, and can start to speculate on what's going on and how they got there. I think there's a good chance we'll learn what's up with them by the end of the third book. Hint: pay close attention whenever anyone tells a fable or a story; none of them give the whole answer, and some of them don't even agree, but taking all of them together paints a pretty full picture of the world's mythology and how there are still dark, secret things going on during Kvothe's youth.

The second one is well-written enough that most of the time one doesn't notice the writing. - 19/10/2011 06:55:59 AM 566 Views
