Esslemont is better at writing in the style of Esslemont than he is at writing in the style of Erikson.

Night of Knives was, as the title implies, very concise. In length and in delivery. One of the problems with the Malazan world is that very few things happen quickly; Night of Knives remedies that flaw.

I was hoping Esslemont would provide a different stylistic approach to the Malazan world, like NoK, but as you say, he seems to be trying to emulate Erikson in this one, without a clear sense of plot or strong characters.

It's his second novel though. Can't wait to see what he does with the Assail continent.

Indeed, I marry them in their unlawful bed, with an open heart I affirm the true right of any man and woman to their dark slobbering nights which are rare enough, and against which too many laws conspire.
