Bolaño's poetry references a lot of them, as the two detectives are stand-ins for him and a poet friend who started the Infrarealismo movement in Mexico that was dedicated to ushering in a new way of looking at poetry and the world described by poetry.

It's the first Bolaño I read (2004-2005), but I think it's not the ideal starting place for people curious about him (2666 is even worse in that regard); By Night in Chile, one of his earliest prose works, would be better in that regard.
