Farthing by Jo Walton, The Separation by Christopher Priest Chas Send a noteboard - 03/03/2012 05:02:19 PM
As silly as it sounds, I hadn't realized this was an actual genre until recently. It sounds interesting...are there any good startings points (let's say five books or so) that you wonderful RAFOnauts can advise me to read? I looked at a few "top 100" lists, but I don't trust those (after all, that's one of the reasons I've been a member of this board for so long.) Thanks for any help.

any number of books by Harry Turtledove (there's a recent post somewhere on the board which lists some of his better ones).

Ash: A Secret History by Mary Gentle. Not strictly an alternate history, but really good.

The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. The Napoleonic Wars with dragons. It's fun.

The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson. 99% of the European population is wiped out by the Black Plague.
