From what I have heard from other series reviews they books fit roughly these categories 1- Good, worth read, 2- Poor but just about serviceable, 3- OMG what is this crap?
It had its issues - the whole series does - but I thought it was a satisfying conclusion to the story and depressingly realistic while still being hopeful. I mean, it can be a bit hard to read when everyone basically has PTSD. The thing is that these aren't really touchy-feely happy books, and while that's obvious from the first book I think a lot of people were expecting something different for the ending of the story. The third book also pretty much leaves the whole conceit of the Hunger Games behind, which I think irritated some people as well. Things change for sure.
Anyway, your review makes it sound worth reading. I might read sometime over the summer.
I think it's definitely worth it to give the first one a try, at least. They're very fast and easy to read. It's a real page-turner.
