I'm only fascist on weekends. Nate Send a noteboard - 16/03/2012 03:57:21 AM
Of course it's been so long I dare say I wouldn't recognize most of them, but as nothing in this list sounds familiar (apart from the Children of the Corn thing because of the movies, not that I've seen any, and then indeed the "stopping in a deserted town in Nowhere, U.S.A." thing that he does so often), it's probably a safe bet I haven't read them. Not sure I want to, to be honest, after reading your descriptions... and yet I liked the King stories I read back in the day well enough. Maybe my taste changed, or maybe I would enjoy them if I read them after all.

I have no idea if I'm making them sound appealing or not in my summary/commentary bits. It's easier to make jokes or pick on the silly parts than it is to effectively describe the parts that work and are creepy. But on the other hand, a friend of mine who is a big King reader from way back had completely different opinions from me on a good quarter of these stories, so tastes really must vary.

Also, I'm rather disturbed by your comments on the smoking thing. :P I can be as fascist as the next guy with regards to smoking (there was a guy standing right behind me on the tram stinking of smoke like you wouldn't believe, and suddenly I found myself thinking about the merits of banning all smokers from public transport and, while we're at it, all public places that aren't outdoors), but your comments, I dunno, probably my sarcasm meter is faulty. :P

I came down on the side of being against it! I was just trying to weigh the arguments, because seriously, smoking, man, I tell you what. But no, even though I don't want it around me I don't think you should be able to force a person to quit or take draconian measures like that. It's just ... the sheer brutal effectiveness of it is impressive.

Also also, I was under the impression that Harry was a perfectly normal abbreviation of Henry - what else is Harry supposed to be short for? Surely there can't be many - if indeed any - Harry's whose real name is Harold or so.

I don't think I've ever heard of someone named Henry being called Harry. You say Harry is short for Henry, but ... they're both the same number of letters. But man, I just Googled it and apparently it's a thing on your side of the pond at least. You guys need to brush up on the concept of shortening names.
