Seriously, I am not averse to popular writers as long as someone doesn't ascribe to them some sort of value they don't have. With Druon I think I was expecting too much. With May I am looking for Orientalist condescension and adventure writing, no more. It's more that Germans love him, he's been translated widely, and as a "cultural" phenomenon I'd like to read his six-part "Oriental Series". I doubt I'd like his American Indian novels, given that they're so inaccurate and I live in the US, but his Orientalist novels...well, sure, I'll go along for the ride as he explains the life of the savage Mussulman heathens.
