The name coming to mind is Karen Armstrong, who has written a number of books on the Abrahamic religions - some books about all three of them, as well as books on each of the separate ones. I read some of them and thought they were interesting (on a science-for-a-larger-audience level, not specialized theology or history of religion) and not too blatantly biased, though I should add that this was easily eight years or more ago, so who knows what I'd think of them now.
And have got her book on the Bible to read.
While I thought the book on Muhammad was very readable, it seemed very sympathetic to me rather than being critical.

Hm, yes, I can see that... that she doesn't really dare to tackle controversies too much.
