It's in line with the big trend to criticize the schooling systems for supposedly abandoning the goal of forming people who can think for themselves and share a basic general culture to produce workers tailored for the needs of the industry instead.

But as much as some of that is real, and disturbing, they really didn't look at the list before lumping the initiative with those issues. Many of the non fiction works are classics in their own right, or otherwise important works (at least for people who need to one day make decisions in the American political system or economy) or landmarks of one kind or another in different fields.

We have this expression that sums it up well: viser le noir, tuer le blanc.
