I seem to be the exact opposite from you in that I prefer stand-alones or barely connected volumes of work. Seems to me, having read several of the series listed above, that quality becomes a concern several volumes in (and several others never had any "quality" writing to begin with in the first place).

Other than that, nothing really to add, as it seems like it's been weeks since I posted at this site :P
