Could you elaborate a bit more on what you mean by "dialectical renderings"? Dan Send a noteboard - 13/03/2013 05:59:15 PM

German is down the line for me, sooner or later. Is the difficulty involved anything like translating the particles in Attic Greek prose?

As you can see I just sort of left it untranslated - I felt that by saying "then" it would give a sense of it. I really don't like my own translations for any of it, though. I think that trying to translate it destroys a lot of the sheer force of invective in the original - like the part about the Flak gun and the "so liberalbürgerlich verblendeten Scheinwelt" part.

Not only that, but the dialectical renderings are going to be Hell for any translator, like the "ick meine, det is ooch so jewesen, meen Führa" sort of speech that Hitler's secretary has. I am assuming it's some sort of Plattdeutsch but having never lived in Germany I couldn't say. It wasn't hard to figure out what she was saying, but it was a little annoying looking.
