THE ADJACENT plays around with a lot of the stuff Priest has done before. You can in theory read it without his prior work, but it's definitely at the tougher end of his books to get into. I'd start with THE PRESTIGE, THE AFFIRMATION or A DREAM OF WESSEX and work up to THE SEPARATION and THE ADJACENT.
