Diana Gabaldon's OUTLANDER books to be adapted for TV by makers of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Werthead Send a noteboard - 25/06/2013 09:31:29 PM

The Starz network has greenlit a 16-episode TV series based on Diana Gabaldon's OUTLANDER novels. The show will be run and executive produced by Ronald D. Moore, the showrunner of the new(er) BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and a veteran STAR TREK writer. Ira Steven Behr, a fellow STAR TREK writer (and showrunner of DEEP SPACE NINE), will also be part of the writing team.

OUTLANDER is a very different sort of story, however. It focuses on a WWII nurse who is displaced in time to 1743, where she meets and falls in love with a Scottish Highlander during the events leading up to the Battle of Culloden. There have been seven enormous books in the series so far with an eighth coming out in March 2014. They have sold over 20 million copies worldwide and have also resulted in the creation of a spin-off series, the LORD JOHN books, focusing on a minor character from the main series.

It is unclear if the TV series will be a faithful adaptation of the first novel in the series (with future seasons adaptating later books), as with GAME OF THRONES, or if this will be a much looser adaptation.
