View original postI was surprised that Burckhardt (Die Kultur der Renaissance in Italien) was so negative on the Borgias and so positive on Julius II. On the other hand, Montanelli tried to be fair with Rodrigo (Pope Alexander VI) and said he wasn't really much worse than many of his contemporaries. It's an interesting story, either way.

Could you recommend any English language books on the subject, or the broader Italian Renaissance period?

The Burckhardt Tom mentioned is available in English translation.
