I have only read American Gods and as the risk of being tarred and feathered I though it was just OK random thoughts Send a noteboard - 25/07/2013 02:22:39 AM

Don't get me wrong it wasn't bad I just didn't think it was great. Like many writers who are called great I think his perceived greatness is at least in part his world view and how well your world view aligns with his will affect how brilliant you find him. Hardly shocking that people think people who agree with the are smart.

I don't know much about his other books but American Gods was a fairly interesting story with some very interesting characters but an underlying theme that America is a soulless land where great cultures go to die. Since most of the gods are just as forgotten in their homelands as they are here I found the basic theory a pile of crap and I admit that distracted from me agreeing he is brilliant. It wasn't preachy and in your face but what is the point of reading great literature if you ignore the themes.

I do plan to read some of his other work and see if I like them better. I do like his writing style and he is great at inventing characters you care about.
