It feels very original, but to be perfectly honest, Kaladin should have had this novel to himself. The two story lines rarely intersected on anything of import and only Kaladin and the assasin (if forget his name) achieved anything.
Sanderson could have taken a lesson from the split of TEotW and created a more manageable two part smaller novel entrance into this world, released them both around the same time and had the girls (another name I can't remember) come to some more accomplished final act. Kaladins story was great enough to get us all hooked and more people would have entered along for the ride on a stated (never heard of this before) 10 by 1k page book series before the first one was published!
