Not only because it encourages the creation of mediocre work, but because it makes the gems that much harder to find.
A good example is YA literature, especially in the pre-Harry Potter days. There were some amazing, awesome concepts and characters (I am thinking specifically of Animorphs), but because it wasn't "real" writing, there was more of a focus on churning out sequels and adding in lots of filler stories.
I amuse myself.
