I first read it in the Oxford World's Classics edition almost 20 years ago, so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I do recall most of the scenes you describe and yes, what you propose does make quite a bit of sense. Wish I could offer more than a hey, I read your review and agree with your points, but I first need to re-read the story, as it's been many years since I last read it.
