The author writes well enough but the subject matter is just somewhat boring. Either that or his sense of pacing is completely off. He spent over 100 pages on the Eighteenth Century, and all that happened was a lot of really boring wrangling on the part of an impotent political body (the Irish Parliament) that was abolished at the end of the Century anyway.
