The author keeps referring back to previous chapters (and volumes), so if you don't read the whole thing then you start to forget the context for previous discussions. As a result, I'm finishing Volume 4 of 4 right now and then will finish my Pio Moa book and that one about religious persecution in Spain. And the Iliad. At some point.
