If, as a layman (in both senses of the word), you want to understand Christianity as a whole, there are a lot of good, modern books that would give you a better understanding of the religion than one old book by Aquinas.
Unless you've got a particular academic interest in a subject, I wouldn't start reading primary texts. Tom may crucify me for this.
