By the time you're close enough to use a sword on a zombie, you're toast. Unless it's a one to one or one to two battle. But otherwise, by the time you're chopping the head off one, the others are coming from the other direction looking for your braaaaaaaaaaaains.
Though if I do recall correctly, I think Brooks suggests keeping a machete around as the perfect zombie head-chopping weapon.
And fun fact: Max Brooks came to my university last year and gave a lecture about surviving the zombie apocalypse. It was amazing.
