A good sword will work just fine, as long as you know how to use it.
Why do you think guys with swords are all covered in blood after the battle? Blood splatters, and if zombie blood gets on you, you're as good as dead, unless you're wearing plastic or something. How do you prevent a drop from hitting your eye? Trying to kill something at arm's length with your eyes closed without letting it touch you is another good way to become zombie chow.
