By the time you're close enough to use a sword on a zombie, you're toast. Unless it's a one to one or one to two battle. But otherwise, by the time you're chopping the head off one, the others are coming from the other direction looking for your braaaaaaaaaaaains.
Though if I do recall correctly, I think Brooks suggests keeping a machete around as the perfect zombie head-chopping weapon.

It is true that you would have to be a real blademaster to take on a whole mob, but even a gun won't usually save you then.
You need to use intellect, humanity's one great advantage over zombiekind, to keep from being caught in such situations in the first place.
