That was pretty much the discussion in a nutshell Perdita Send a noteboard - 01/09/2009 02:23:57 AM

I hesitate to recommend GRRM or GGK to my friends/relatives that think Eragon etc is good. I'm afraid it'll blow their minds! I usually ease them into better fantasy like WoT or Sanderson before I pull out the big guns.

I'd like to have heard the debate about HP and The Dark Is Rising. I like both of them (I read TDIR when I was young and reread a couple years ago). There are both good but very different. I think I would recommend HP to non-readers and TDIR to more accomplished readers.

I like to recommend the very best books, my absolute favourites, esp in the face of such rubbish. Knee-jerk reaction. "You think that's amazing? You just WAIT!"

The HP/DiR debate was interesting. I took the position of "HP is fluff but decent fluff, DiR is darker and far more intriguing and therefore better" which she hates the idea of, because she feels it has no purpose. She thinks children's fiction and children's fantasy moreso should be less about fear and more about education, I suppose. As in, Harry is a better role model than Will, so it's a better book series (in the same way that LotR is better than ASOIAF because Aragorn is a good man whereas GRRM doesn't have so many). I just don't like that idea.
