A little more recent (1940s), but I'd suggest Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake. I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, but "rushed" is one thing it definitely is not. :D


Definitely not a book to read sparingly either. You really have to sit down with it and dedicate some time, or you will be going around in circles. That's what happened to me. I enjoyed what I read, but man I went nowhere. Going to have to pick it up again someday.
