I wanted to share a bit about an important book to me. The Dragon Prince by Melanie Rawn (spoilers) MightyYT Send a noteboard - 03/11/2009 12:49:49 PM
This is the first fantasy book that I ever read. This is the first book that I devoured. It is also the book that led me to enjoy fantasy so much. I suck at book reviews, so I will just say what ever I feel like and there might be slight spoilers.

From the book's own description:

The Dragon Lord - When Rohan became the new prince of the Desert, ruler of the kingdom granted his family for as long as the Long Sands spewed fire, he took the crown with two ogoals in mind. First and foremost, he souht to bring permanent peace to his world of divided princedoms, realms hovering always on the brink of war. And, in a land where dragon-slaying was a proof of manhood, Rohan was the sole champion of the dragons, fighting desperately to preserve the last remaining lords of the sky and with them a secret which might be the salvation of his people...

And His Sunrunner Witch - Sioned, who was fated by Fire to be Rohan's bride, had mastered the magic of sunlight and moonglow, catching hints of a yet to be formed pattern which could irrevocably affect the destinies of Sunrunners and ordinary mortals alike. Yet caught in the machinations of the Lady of Goddess Keep, and of Prince Rohan and his sworn enemy, the treacherously cunning High Prince, could Sioned alter this crucial pattern to protect her lord from the menace of a war that threatened to set the land ablaze?

The book has a bit of everything. Action, politics, romance, comedy, dragons...It is done in a manner which never gets boring. The politics are intriguing and you are given insights in to the way the people come up with their ideas.

There is war and battles...as well as a fight with a dragon.

There is romance and scheming, betrayals and loyalties.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the series, and something explored more through out the entire series, is the way the magic works. The Faradrim, or Runrunners, use light to work their magic. They need need the light from the sun or the moon. They can do things like call fire or create wind, but they can also communicate with each other.
The sunrunners use the light to send their mind out in to the world. Each Sunrunner's projected self is seen as a set of colors. It is how they differentiate between each other. While they are out, if anything happens to block the light, they are lost. Bodies live (but not long) but there is no mind. It is a different way to do things, and Brandon Sanderson's WarBreaker reminded of it in a way.

The descriptions of everything in this series is amazing. It really helps to define a clear sense of the world and everything in it. You get a clear view of the different castles and locations, the people are clearly defined.

There really is something for everyone in this series. It was a good book and the start of two trilogies. Try it out and see if you like it.
Castle: This is so weird. I dressed up as him for Halloween.

Beckett: Me too.

~When Castle and Beckett met Gene Simmons.
