I actually had a similar experience to yours. I'd read The Lord of the RIngs, and was depressed at the end. A trip to the local library landed me The Dragon Prince, and ignited my passion for fantasy as a genre.
I was sad to see Melanie Rawn pretty much peter out as a writer over the past 12 years or so. I remember reading she had personal problems, which I was sorry to hear, and missed her contributions to the genre.

I wanted to share a bit about an important book to me. The Dragon Prince by Melanie Rawn (spoilers)

I never hated a series so much while still reading all six books.
