Stories such as Warbreaker and The Runelords where magic is worked as a 'theft' of someone else's essence can also lead to interesting wrinkles, moral dilemmas and difficult choices.

I've always been fascinated by some aspects of magic with consequence. I am working on a short story where certain people gain access to a form of magic when they get extremely ill. The sicker the person the more powerful their potential magic. The more those people use their power, the more their illness defeats their bodies.

Because it sounds very familiar and I can't place it.
Castle: This is so weird. I dressed up as him for Halloween.

Beckett: Me too.

What is the purpose of a "good" magic system in fantasy? - 02/11/2009 05:15:29 PM 1098 Views
For me at least, it changes with each story, and each telling. - 02/11/2009 07:47:59 PM 789 Views
Well, the Dying Earth genre can do this quite effectively. - 03/11/2009 04:08:45 PM 664 Views
