You are probably right. It would be interesting to compare to one of his better novels in the original feuilleton. Still, I fail to see how he can do anything about the nauseating Hector. The whole Burma story could be cut without the novel being any the poorer for it, for example.


That a lot of the repetition in phrases and descriptions of Hector and his abilities would have been cut or adjusted in the move from serial to long publication. I would also imagine that some adjustments to characterization would have been made.



I know. That, if anything, is the biggest of the losses.
