I think that one of the true strong points in LAMENTATION is Ken Scholes ability to craft his world, full of history, politics, and the vast passage of time, while not spending a distracting amount of attention to the effort.
The balance of both technology and mystical elements add to the overall feel of the world. The differing phases of life and development over the millenia, the scattered remains and leftover information, make for an interesting framework. I just sort of enjoy the thought of special weapons like Magic Spell singing robots in a mostly medieval-like setting. That juxtaposition of ideas is interesting, and it opens up possibilities to explore both elements of the human experience.
The physical world around the action of the story remains a bit nebulous for the majority of the story, though I do like how Scholes evokes place at different times during the story. The destroyed city of Windiwir and the Gypsy kingdom in particular. The rest of the story the settings seem rather generic, not to the detriment of the story but not adding much either.

At least it wasn't as heavy-handed in LAMENTATION.
