if you think they'll like fantasy...The Dragonriders of Pern are an excellent intro to the Sci-fi skeptical, imo. They don't read or feel like scifi to a lot of people who don't know the genre and the don't have any "spaceships". well. okay. they do. but they'll totally be hooked by the time they're even mentioned, and it'll be a nice gradual transition for them 
After all, what kind of sci-fi has DRAGONS, jeez!!!
