Karsa is one of the more interesting, conflicted, and hated characters in the Malazan world. When I first read HOC, I didn't really care for him or his story either, but it's grown on me. And I enjoy reading about him in later books.
But the good news is that the Karsa novella (first part of HOC) isn't that long and then you get into the rest of the book, which is much more entertaining and classic Erikson.
