Mary Doria Russell's A Thread of Grace and Walter Moers' books were closer to being on that list than Harkaway's. While I liked that book, quite a few people would find it rather annoying to read, ya know ;)


What makes it annoying?


Since I don't care much for da kung-fu, that is one knock against it. Another is the narrative voice isn't uniformly strong throughout the novel; it takes several chapters before Harkaway develops his voice fully. I suspect his second novel will see improvements in story structure and prose.


I don't know. That was my impression the first time, as well; but I just started re-reading it, and it works much better this time around. I suspect it just took me a while to get into the rhythm of it.


Then again, I just don't have a burning desire to re-read it anytime soon. The others I'm more likely to re-read first.
